HOUSTON. (May 13, 2021) – Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX) business, achieved the highest level of Safety & Health Excellence Award from the Johnson Space Center Contractor Safety & Health Forum. The team supports NASA’s mission-critical human spaceflight training and test activities at the Center’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab – the United States’ largest indoor pool, where astronauts train for working in space.

The Contractor Safety & Health Forum at the Johnson Space Center recognized Raytheon Intelligence & Space’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab Operations Contract team for maintaining a culture of safety, achieving exceptional safety metrics and establishing COVID-19 mitigation practices that enabled NASA to continue high-consequence training and testing safely through the global pandemic.

Raytheon Intelligence & Space’s team created and implemented safety guidelines that made it possible for essential personnel to safely return to work in support of International Space Station training at the Johnson Space Center. The team demonstrated commitment to safe operations and high performance as they introduced COVID-19 protocols to an already highly choreographed and complex operation.

“Our nation’s human spaceflight endeavors are 24/7/365 high-consequence missions that do not stop executing during pandemics,” said Randal Lindner, senior program manager for the Neutral Buoyancy Lab Operations contract. “Our team played a significant role in ensuring our astronauts continued preparing for extra-vehicular activities, or ‘space walks,’ without interruption.”

The Neutral Buoyancy Lab at the Johnson Space Center is a massive 202 feet long, 102 feet wide and 40 feet deep, containing 6.2 million gallons of water. RI&S has provided engineering, fabrication, maintenance and operations support for the facility and the systems that transform it into a fully instrumented laboratory with a suite of on-site support services for the past 18 years.
