NSA Approves Type-1 Certification of X-Net™ Software-Defined Radio system

Raytheon Intelligence & Space’s X-Net will support secure weapons data-link operations

ARLINGTON, Va., (May 25, 2021) — Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX) business, received Type-1 certification of X-Net from the National Security Agency in support of the Department of Defense. X-Net is a new, small form factor, data link communications system that was specially designed for integration in small munitions.

This certification establishes X-Net as a Crypto High Value Product to support weapons data link operations and interoperability with multiple Defense Department air and ground platforms.

Military operators need the ability to redirect or unarm airborne-launched munitions in mid-flight using in-flight target updates over a secure data link. X-Net supports this mission requirement by providing robust, secure data communications for effectors in contested or harsh radio frequency environments.

“Raytheon Intelligence & Space has developed and produced more than 100 NSA-certified information security products over the past 30 years,” said Denis Donohue, vice president, Communications and Airspace Management Systems, RI&S. “X-Net fills a critical need for the military; as more platforms connect to communications networks, it will be vital to keep the data transmitted on those networks secure, especially when it comes to controlling weapons.”
