Identification Friend or Foe (IFF)

A plane fitted with IFF transponders flying through the sky.

Identification Friend or Foe is an identification system designed for command and control. It enables military and civilian air traffic control interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator.

Raytheon Intelligence & Space has more than 70 years of experience in IFF, Mode S, TCAS, FAA / Eurocontrol ATC solutions, and IFF/ATC interoperability issues. We have installed and maintained IFF transponders and interrogators on more than 120 platforms around the world, offering a family of advanced Mark XII A, AIMS Certified IFF solutions for a multitude of military applications – in the air, on land, or at sea. In today’s ever-changing global environment, it’s more critical than ever to use a proven, secure question-and-answer system that distinguishes platforms as friendly, enemy or neutral.

Our IFF Family of Products include:

AN/APX-119 IFF Mark XII A, Mode S, ADS-B Digital Transponder
The APX-119, a combined Mk XIIA / Mode S / Mode 5 /ADS-B capable / AIMS certified transponder, enables aircraft to operate seamlessly throughout international, civil, and military airspace, while meeting all IFF and ATC requirements. Utilizing the latest digital processing technologies, the APX-119 provides positive identification and increased safety, while incorporating full Mk XIIA, Mode S, Mode 5 and ADS-B capabilities into a flexible open system architecture.

We are developing a new transponder variant with an embedded, ADS-B TSO-C145c approved, GPS receiver to the APX-119 ADS-B series product line. The APX-119, coupled with the embedded GPS, provides a self-contained, low risk means to meet the ADS-B mandates without multiple aircraft-level analysis and installation of additional components.

APX-119 transponders have an installed base of more than 8,000 units across 50 different platforms for the U.S. Department of Defense and multiple international users. The APX-119 is plug-and-play compatible with legacy APX-100 and APX-101 transponders as well as a replacement for panel mount APX-100, APX-64, APX-72 and APX-108 transponders.

Mini XP Mark XII A Transponder
This miniaturized IFF transponder, based on the APX-119, is designed for UAVs and small platforms and offers a 66% reduction of volume and weight versus the standard sized transponder. The Mini XP transponder provides Mk XIIA compatible performance in a small, lightweight unit that will operate in the harshest military environments. The Mini XP provides the most up to date civil ATC and military IFF features and is well positioned for technology upgrades and future growth capability.

AN/APX-100 Mark XII/Mode S/EHS/TCAS IFF Transponder
Our legacy transponder, the APX-100, began production in 1978 and was upgraded through continuous improvements to meet military Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) needs for a fully integrated solution. Now near retirement, the APX-100 has been superseded by the APX-119 series transponders that incorporate state-of-the-art technology to meet the demanding civil and military airspace mandates.

IFF 4810 Transponder
Our Successor Identification Friend or Foe (SIFF) equipment is currently in use by the U.K. armed forces on a variety of platforms. The IFF 4810 Transponder has been designed to meet all the requirements of U.K. airborne and naval applications. Raytheon Intelligence & Space is the prime contractor to the U.K. Ministry of Defence for SIFF equipment.

The IFF 4810 provides complete dual antenna diversity identification friend or foe (IFF) facility. It can be interrogated by MKXII OR MKXA IFF interrogators conforming to STANAG 4193, plus civil SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar) Interrogator conforming to ICAO Annex 10, including Mode S.

The transponder is fitted with an Appliqué Mode 4 Cryptographic unit which can be removed in applications where mode 4 responses are not required. Interfaces are provided for the Mode S Air Data Link Processor (ADLP), Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) and GPS Position Reporting.

This combined MKXII and Mode S transponder enables military aircraft to operate seamlessly throughout international civil and military airspace, meeting all critical IFF and ATC requirements.

Mode 5/ADS-B Digital Control Panel
Digital Control Panel (DCP) provides Mode 5 and legacy capabilities with user friendly menus and enhanced features for operators and maintainers. Programmable output allows customization of alert messages to meet the latest DoD AIMS and civil requirements. The DCP is configured like the Flight Management System for common training across Buss and Non-Buss platforms.

AN/TPX-57(V) Common IFF Interrogator
The AN/TPX-57(V) Interrogator provides the world’s first fully integrated MK XIIA / Mode 4/5 capability for Air Defense, Surveillance, and Air Traffic Control Platforms and continues to be the solution of choice for the US Army.

Model 5800 IFF Interrogator
Our Model 5800 Interrogator provides MK XIIA capability with enhanced reliability.

Cooperative Aviation Surveillance Sensor (CASS)
Raytheon Intelligence & Space has adapted the TPX-57 Air Defense Interrogator for use as a passive sensor to capture self-reporting signals transmitted by targets to provide critical situational awareness with zero probability of detection. When coupled with an omni directional platform antenna, CASS has demonstrated the ability to detect and display cooperative targets to a radius of 200 nautical miles with no detectable RF signature.

AN/APX-114 Long Range Airborne IFF Interrogator System
The AN/APX-114 IFF Interrogator provides the world's most advanced solution for airborne applications. It's the most technically advanced, compact and lightweight interrogator available for airborne, long-range and shipboard IFF. Designed as a replacement for the APX-76 airborne interrogator, the APX-114 was selected by the U.S. Air Force as part of their F-15 aircraft modernization plan and has been fielded by multiple nations for the P-3 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

The APX-114 provides advanced processing capability to rapidly identify friendly targets. The system is designed with a Versa Module Eurocard (VME) open architecture that enables maximum system flexibility and supports practical upgrades.

The APX-114 is compatible with all F-15 mechanically scanned radars. When paired with our AS-4664 electronically scanned IFF antennae, the APX-114 achieves AESA radar compatibility.

The APX-114 offers Mark XIIA (Mode 5) IFF compatibility when used with the KIV-77 Mode 4/5 Crypto Applique.

AS-4664 IFF ESA Antenna
The IFF ESA Antennae is part of the total avionics solution for the F-15. The ESA provides airborne advanced IFF operation with APG-63 AESA radars. Based on proven phase shifter technology, the ESA provides a 120 degree field of view, full built-in-test and future growth capability.
